Our story
My name is Leigh, and I founded D&H Trainers in November 2024. The journey that led me here is a little unusual, but it’s one I’m incredibly proud of.
I walk my two dogs—Molly, my 12‑month‑old Staffy, and Lola, my 18‑month‑old Foxy—up the road every day. One morning, someone stopped me and asked if I was a dog trainer. At the time, I wasn’t. I was simply working with my own dogs. They told me they often saw us walking and were amazed at how calm and well‑behaved my girls were. They wanted the same for their dog.
I agreed to meet their family and their dog, and over the next seven weeks we worked together and saw real progress. That experience lit a spark in me. I realised how much I wanted to help others understand their dogs better and build the kind of harmonious relationships that come from trust, communication, and a strong bond. That moment was the beginning of D&H Trainers. I soon caught on that it’s the humans that didn’t understand their dogs and that the communication break down stems from that. No dog is a BAD dog! Just a misunderstood dog.
Meet Molly the Staffy. Molly is a bouncy young girl that loves to play and run and chase frizbees.
WHAT GOT US MOTIVATED
When I began training my own girls more intentionally, I discovered how responsive they were to treats and clicker training. The clicker helped me capture the exact moment of the behaviour I wanted, and the treat reinforced it. From there, I dove deep into learning—researching dog behaviour, training methods, body language, and what our dogs truly need from us.
Although I’ve had dogs for over 20 years, I’ve faced my share of challenges. There is always something we can learn from our mistakes and what we get right. It wasn’t until I recognized where I needed to change that everything shifted. By adjusting my own behavior and communication, I gained a clearer understanding of my dogs and how to support them.
